Small bedrooms may have limited storage space, but you can make the most out of the area with the furniture you select. Instead of surrounding a bed with extra dressers or wardrobes to hold items in, consider how bed frames and furniture pieces can provide extra storage along with an ideal place to set your mattress.
Whether the room is for yourself, a child, or someone else in the house, the furniture options are versatile and provide plenty of ways to add extra storage and a comfortable place to sleep.
1. Bunk Beds & Loft Beds
If your child has a smaller bedroom, then you can expand storage options to two different furniture options. The first is a traditional bunk bed. The bunk bed design typically features a bottom bunk and a top bunk. Some designs include built-in shelves on the side of the bunk bed. If the bed is only for one child, then you can use the whole other part for storage.
For example, a child could sleep on the top bunk and the bottom bunk could hold folded clothes, books, or bulky items like toys and stuffed animals. As an alternative, consider a loft bed. A loft bed frame is essentially a bunk bed without the bottom bed attached.
A loft frame includes a lot of open space on the bottom and will not take up extra floor space. Some loft beds include a built-in desk or built-in shelves on the bottom frame. A child's bedroom has a lot of room to work with when using a loft bed. You can add extra lounge chairs, beanbag chairs, or fit a full dresser underneath the bed.
2. Under Bed Storage
A standard bed frame will typically have open space underneath. While the area is ideal for storage, you do not want to constantly dig around to find and pull out items. Keep the area organized with a bed frame that includes built-in storage drawers. Some frames include drawers in the front and others have drawers on the side.
The drawers make it easy to organize items like pajamas, slippers, extra blankets, and socks. The use of the drawers also eliminates the look of clutter and allows a room to stay more organized. The items inside the drawers will have far less dust and debris than they would if simply stored underneath a regular bed.
3. Storage Ottoman
One piece of furniture that comes as an add-on or part of a bed set is a bed-bench storage ottoman. Placed at the end of a bed frame, the storage ottoman gives you a place to sit and features a hollowed-out inside ideal for storage.
Keep easy access items like blankets and extra throw pillows inside the ottoman.
When placed snug up against the end of a bed, the ottoman doesn't take up a lot of extra space and provides you with a lot of extra storage. Some ottoman designs may include smaller drawers instead of a flip-top option.
4. Bookcase Bed Frame
The headboard you purchase as part of your bed frame may also include extra storage options. Shop for a bookcase bed frame that includes storage shelves right in the headboard. The headboard is hollowed out with smaller shelves inthe space.
You could use the area as a charging station for devices like phones and tablets. You could keep books there, add cups of water at night, or other small decorations.
Some bed frames may include sliding doors that block up some of the storage options. Shop around to see what options are available and will fit into your nighttime routine.
